Bringing Technology to the Forefront

Technology at its best and brightest… 16th March saw the launch of MOS-AK/GSA India 2012 at sprawling campus of The Jaypee Institute of Information Technology (JIIT), NOIDA. Organised by the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE), in association with JIIT and GSA this workshop, first of its kind in India is a perfect platform to provide a Hi-Tech forum to discuss the frontiers of device modeling for Microsystems – with emphasis on simulation-aware models. This workshop is being organized as the Curtain Raiser to mark INAE’s Silver Jubilee celebrations, and will be followed by many such innovative programmes through the year.

Professor Webster, from the University of California at Berkeley was the Chief Guest of the workshop. He is a recipient of the prestigious Humboldt Fellowship (1976) and the Davidson Medal for excellence in Ship Hydrodynamics, SNAME (1992) and has over 85 publications in internationally reputed journals to his credit. Amidst much fanfare, and august gathering comprising of eminent speakers and the elitist think tank from across the globe – from Switzerland, Malaysia, Austria, IIT Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, IBM, Berkeley USA, amongst many others – the workshop began with a technical session chaired by Wladek Grabinski from EPFL, Switzerland who is also the Group Manager of MOS-AK/GSA. The first talk by Mitiko Miura-Mattausch, of Hiroshima University, Japan focused on HiSIM Compact Model Family. After lunch there was an interesting MOS-AK/GSA Poster Session and then the second technical session chaired by Rajamohan Varambally from STMicroelectronics resumed and saw many well attended talks by industry leaders including one by Vaidyanathan Subramanian, from IBM, India on II-3 High Voltage (HV) MOSFET Technology Models & Applications. Dr. Zarabi, Vice President of INAE and Chairman, INAE forum on Microelectronics is an important participant at this workshop. In addition to a number of research publications, Dr. Zarabi has co-authored a book on Electron Devices that gives a unique treatment to the subject and also co-authored an IETE Series book on Microelectronics. He has also been one among those few who have philosophized on the future of microelectronics early on.

“The specific goal of the workshop is to classify the most important directions for the future development of the microelectronic device models and we also intend this to serve as a platform for launch of MOS-AK/GSA India, a forum which will help galvanise the microelectronics modeling community in India,” shared Prof. AB Bhattacharyya of JIIT, Chairman of the International Advisory Committee while speaking at the occasion. “The MOS-AK aspires to build a community with global connections by: promoting standardization of the compact models and its implementation into software tools; connecting national and local modeling groups on European level; and building strong bilateral ties with similar organizations around the world,” he added. Given the importance of this event, MOS-AK/GSA India 2012, it has been sponsored by many leading microelectronics companies notably IBM, austriamicrosystems, Texas Instruments, STMicroelectronics and Mentor Graphics and also supported by Government of India department of Electronics and IT (DEIT) and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).

In another interesting and encouraging development the Government on 15th March announced the setting up of an empowered committee for identifying technology and investors for setting up two semiconductor wafer fabrication (Fab) facilities in the country. The members of this empowered committee include adviser to the Prime minister on public information, infrastructure and innovation, chairman of National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC), secretary to the department of expenditure and member (industry) of the Planning Commission. M J Zarabi, former CMD of Semiconductor Complex Ltd (SCL) is the technical expert, and secretary, DIT is its member convener.

November 22nd 2011 – The sixth annual TechWorld – the UK’s largest international technology event, welcomed thousands of technology professionals across two days at the ExCeL, 16-17 November 2011. Investors from over 50 countries came to see the latest technology products and services from British companies at an exhibition hosted by UK Trade & Investment, sponsored by PA Consulting and Huawei Europe.

Attendees visited the exhibition of over 100 UK technology businesses and took part in a schedule of seminars, conference sessions and One2One business meetings. Day One was opened by Nick Baird, Chief Executive Officer at UK Trade & Investment, together with Ed Vaizey, Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries.
